Morpheus8 and Radiofrequency Microneedling: What Does RF Actually Do?

Morpheus8 treatment performed by Dr. Donlan

Morpheus8 is frequently described as a skin-tightening treatment, but that description does not fully explain how the technology works.

Morpheus8 combines microneedling with radiofrequency energy. The microneedles enter the skin at controlled depths and deliver thermal energy beneath the surface. This creates a targeted tissue response that can support collagen remodeling and gradual improvements in skin quality.

At Donlan Aesthetics in Beverly Hills, Morpheus8 may be used to address concerns such as uneven texture, enlarged pores, fine lines, acne scarring and mild skin laxity.

What Is Radiofrequency Energy?

Radiofrequency, commonly shortened to RF, is a form of electrical energy that generates controlled heat within tissue.

In aesthetic treatments, RF is not the same as radiation from an X-ray, and it does not resurface the skin in the same way as a traditional ablative laser. Instead, RF energy creates heat at selected depths.

Controlled heating can cause an immediate contraction response in existing collagen while also initiating a longer remodeling process. Over the following weeks and months, the skin’s natural repair response may produce improvements in firmness and texture.

How Does Morpheus8 Combine RF With Microneedling?

Traditional microneedling creates controlled microchannels in the skin. These micro-injuries initiate a healing response that can support new collagen formation.

Morpheus8 adds radiofrequency energy to that process. Once the needles reach the programmed depth, RF energy is delivered through the needle array.

The treatment therefore works through two complementary mechanisms:

  1. Mechanical stimulation from microneedling

  2. Controlled thermal stimulation from radiofrequency energy

The provider can adjust treatment depth and energy according to the area, skin characteristics and treatment objective.

What Can Morpheus8 Treat?

Morpheus8 may be considered for several face and body concerns, including:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles

  • Acne scars

  • Uneven skin texture

  • Enlarged pores

  • Mild jowling

  • Reduced skin elasticity

  • Crepey skin

  • Certain scars

  • Mild laxity beneath the chin

It is important to distinguish gradual skin remodeling from surgical lifting. Morpheus8 may improve mild or moderate concerns, but it cannot remove significant excess skin or reproduce the result of a facelift.

A realistic consultation should explain what the treatment may improve and what it cannot.

Does Radiofrequency Melt Facial Fat?

This question has received increased attention as RF microneedling has become more popular.

Radiofrequency energy can affect tissue beneath the skin, and certain devices or treatment protocols may be intended to reach deeper structures. Whether fat is affected depends on factors such as needle depth, energy level, treatment location, device settings and patient anatomy.

For patients seeking facial rejuvenation, indiscriminate volume loss is not desirable. Facial fat supports youthful contours, particularly in the cheeks and temples. This is one reason treatment should be customized rather than performed using the same aggressive settings on every patient.

In October 2025, the FDA issued a safety communication after receiving reports of serious complications associated with certain uses of RF microneedling devices. Reported complications included burns, scarring, fat loss, nerve damage and disfigurement. The FDA advises patients to seek care from licensed providers with specific training and experience using these devices.

This does not mean every RF microneedling treatment causes these complications. It does reinforce that Morpheus8 is a medical procedure—not a casual facial or an appropriate at-home treatment.

Why Does Provider Experience Matter?

RF microneedling requires judgment about:

  • Facial anatomy

  • Skin thickness

  • Treatment depth

  • Energy level

  • Number of passes

  • Areas where volume should be preserved

  • Existing pigmentation or scarring

  • Previous fillers, surgery or energy-based treatments

The ideal settings for an acne scar may be different from those used for mild laxity along the jawline. Thin under-eye skin should not be approached in the same way as thicker tissue elsewhere on the face or body.

More energy does not automatically produce a better outcome. The objective is to deliver enough controlled stimulation to create improvement without causing unnecessary tissue injury.

Is Morpheus8 Painful?

A topical numbing medication is typically applied before treatment. Patients may experience pressure, heat or brief pinching sensations during the procedure.

Comfort varies according to the treatment area and settings used. More intensive treatments may cause greater discomfort and a longer recovery period.

Patients should tell the provider when an area feels unexpectedly painful rather than assuming severe pain is required for the treatment to work.

What Is the Downtime After Morpheus8?

Temporary redness, swelling, tenderness or a rough skin texture can occur after treatment. Tiny pinpoint marks may be visible where the needles entered the skin.

Recovery depends on treatment intensity and individual sensitivity. Patients should use gentle products, avoid picking at the skin, and follow all aftercare instructions.

Sun protection is particularly important during healing. Strong active ingredients such as retinoids or exfoliating acids may need to be paused until the skin barrier has recovered.

How Many Morpheus8 Sessions Are Needed?

Some patients notice improvement after one treatment, but a series may be recommended for more substantial concerns.

The appropriate number of sessions depends on:

  • The condition being treated

  • Its severity

  • The patient’s age and skin quality

  • Treatment intensity

  • The body area

  • Previous procedures

  • The patient’s tolerance for downtime

Because collagen remodeling takes time, the final result should not be judged immediately. Improvements may continue developing for several months.

Morpheus8 vs. Regular Microneedling

Regular microneedling may be appropriate for patients primarily concerned with superficial texture, fine lines, pores or acne scars.

Morpheus8 adds controlled heat at selected depths and may be considered when the treatment plan also calls for deeper remodeling or improvement in mild laxity.

Neither treatment is automatically superior. The right option depends on the concern, skin characteristics, treatment history and acceptable level of downtime.

Is Morpheus8 Right for You?

A consultation is especially important for patients who:

  • Have thin facial tissue or significant volume loss

  • Are prone to abnormal scarring

  • Have active acne, infection or inflammation

  • Have recently received fillers or another energy treatment

  • Have implanted electrical or medical devices

  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding

  • Have a history of difficult healing

Not every patient is an appropriate candidate, and treatment may need to be postponed or replaced with another option.
